Scheduling Elective Rotations at MCMC
Mercy Catholic Medical Center (MCMC) offers clinical clerkships to medical students affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM), Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and other Osteopathic Institutions from across the country. DUCOM students and Osteopathic students follow distinct procedures for scheduling their electives:
All clinical clerkships are to be scheduled through DUCOM.
Electives offered for DUCOM students include:
- Internal Medicine: 3rd year clerkships and 4th year sub-internship
- Neurology: 4th year
- General Surgery: 3rd year clerkships and 4th year sub-internship
- Psychiatry: 3rd year clerkships
- Diagnostic Radiology: 4th year
- Emergency Medicine: 4th year
- Infectious Disease: 4th year
Electives offered to Osteopathic Students include:
- Medicine
- Intensive Care Unit
- Cardiology
- Gastroenterology
- Pulmonology
- Surgery (including General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Anesthesia)
Osteopathic students must follow these steps to schedule electives:
- Students who wish to apply for a four-week elective rotation must contact our osteopathic student coordinator, Janet Thorp by EMAIL ONLY at jthorp@mercyhealth.org
- Students must make their request at least four weeks prior to the intended start of a rotation. Applications received after this time will not be accepted.
- With the now nearly universally use of smartphones and cell phones by students, we have eliminated the use of student pagers. Students must submit their cell phone number at the time of registering for a rotation. This number will be used to contact the student throughout the month by the healthcare team.
- Students must provide a letter from their school, stating that they are in good academic standing, are covered by the school’s malpractice insurance and are current with vaccinations and PPD testing.
- Your medical school will need to provide the following information to MCMC before the start of the rotation: Health record and immunizations, Insurance, HIPAA, and Letter of good standing.
