Osteopathic Requirements

All osteopathic physicians and any allopathic physicians who choose to participate in the Osteopathic Recognition program will be expected to uphold the four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine as listed below:
Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine
The Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine express the underlying philosophy of osteopathic medicine and were approved by the AOA House of Delegates as policy.
- The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind and spirit.
- The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
- Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
- Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation and the interrelationship of structure and function.
Requirements
As part of the Osteopathic Recognition program, residents are expected to embrace Osteopathic philosophy and incorporate Osteopathic Principles and Practice on all rotations, and they are expected to demonstrate proficiency in Osteopathic Milestones. Additionally, residents are expected to fulfill the following requirements:
- In person attendance at 75% of SMMC/Nazareth Quarterly Workshops (when unable to attend in person, must view video)
- Attend OMM inpatient rounds and be part of lead resident team twice annually
- Utilize OMT in outpatient clinic
- FM specific- must perform 50 OMM procedures with 10 occurring in 1st year
- IM specific- must attend OMT clinic at least quarterly
- Pass yearly written exam and practical exam
- Participate in one osteopathic scholarly activity
- Give one case presentation and lead one journal club at the Quarterly workshop
- Meet with Director of Osteopathic Education twice yearly
Evaluation
Evaluation and feedback are routinely incorporated into the osteopathic recognition program. This occurs in the following ways:
- Monthly written evaluations of rotations
- During the Clinical Competency Committee review
- During mid-year competency evaluations
- During end of year written exam and competency evaluation
- During semi-annual evaluation with Director of Osteopathic Education
- Written feedback from grand rounds presentation
- At final summative evaluation with Director of Osteopathic Education
