Program Overview
The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Mercy Catholic Medical Center (MCMC)/Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic (THMA) is an ACGME-accredited four-year categorical residency program offering 16 residency positions. Our mission is to develop highly skilled, compassionate radiologists who are prepared to excel in private practice, academic medicine and subspecialty fellowship training.
Residents complete the majority of their training at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania, while also interpreting studies from St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pennsylvania; Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Saint Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. Pediatric radiology training is provided at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), one of the nation’s leading pediatric healthcare institutions.
Through a combination of diverse clinical experiences, close faculty mentorship, progressive responsibility, and a strong culture of education, residents graduate with the skills, confidence and experience necessary to thrive in modern radiology practice.

One of the defining strengths of our program is the close relationship between residents and faculty. With 27 dedicated subspecialty-trained radiologists, residents receive individualized teaching, direct supervision, and meaningful mentorship throughout training.

Resident-first training
As a fellowship-free program, residents are the primary learners across all clinical settings. This structure maximizes educational opportunities, allowing residents to interpret a high volume of studies, participate in a broad range of procedures, and develop progressive autonomy throughout residency.
The result is a training experience that prepares graduates exceptionally well for fellowship training and independent practice.
Clinical experience
Residents gain experience across all major diagnostic and interventional imaging modalities, including:
- Interventional radiology and angiography
- Computed tomography (CT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Ultrasound
- Nuclear medicine and PET/CT
- Digital radiography and fluoroscopy
- Breast imaging
Our integrated PACS and Epic systems provide access to a large volume of cases across multiple hospitals, exposing residents to a broad spectrum of pathology and diverse patient populations.
Academic excellence
The program places a strong emphasis on education, board preparation, and scholarship. Graduates consistently achieve excellent performance on the American Board of Radiology (ABR) Core Examination and successfully match into highly competitive fellowship programs nationwide.
Residents regularly collaborate with faculty on research projects, educational exhibits, and quality improvement initiatives. Many present their work at national meetings, including RSNA and ARRS and publish in leading radiology journals.

Transitional year program
The Transitional Year Residency Program at Mercy Catholic Medical Center is fully integrated with the Diagnostic Radiology Residency and serves as the preliminary year for incoming radiology residents.
Accredited by both the ACGME and AOA, the program provides a strong clinical foundation while offering early exposure to radiology through dedicated rotations in diagnostic radiography and ultrasound. These experiences familiarize residents with imaging fundamentals, departmental workflow, and faculty before the start of radiology residency.
The integrated pathway provides a seamless transition from internship through residency. Both programs participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
