Symptoms

Symptoms for colorectal or gastrointestinal cancer may include:

  • A persistent change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain
  • A feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Poor appetite
  • Abdominal (belly) pain
  • Vague discomfort in the abdomen, usually above the navel
  • A sense of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating a small meal
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting, with or without blood
  • Swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)

Testing

If your doctor finds something suspicious during an exam, or if you have possible symptoms of cancer, your doctor will recommend exams and tests to find the cause including:

  • Blood tests
  • Colonoscopy
  • Biopsy
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan
  • Ultrasound- abdominal, endorectal, and intraoperative
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Endorectal MRI
