patient mammogramBreast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women in the United States. However, when detected early, it is treatable, emphasizing the importance of screening.

An annual mammogram is one of the easiest ways for women to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, recommended around the age of 40. However, for individuals with a family history of breast cancer, screening may be recommended before the age of 40.

The mammogram screening is straightforward and quick, taking approximately 15 minutes from start to finish. While most mammograms do not require follow-up treatment, the following results may necessitate further diagnostic testing:

  • The presence of a mass
  • A mass with irregular or spiculated-looking edges
  • Calcifications

If additional testing is needed, the provider may prescribe an ultrasound, diagnostic mammogram or breast MRI to closely evaluate the mass and determine if it’s benign or cancerous. If breast cancer is found, the providers work together to create a tailored treatment plan.
