Nazareth Outpatient Pharmacy is a one-stop-shop for medications and more

For Nazareth Hospital patients who need to get a prescription filled, they don’t have to worry about hectic lines at large drugstore chains. Rather, after their appointment, they can simply head to the Nazareth Outpatient Pharmacy, located right on the hospital’s campus, to pick up their medication with little to no wait time.
Since its opening in January 2023, the Nazareth Outpatient Pharmacy has been providing quick, friendly and helpful service. This is something that lead pharmacist David Cunningham truly prides himself on.
“You’re not going to be a number. We’re going to get to know you, your family, your friends, whoever you bring along with you,” Cunningham says. “We’re going to treat everyone equally and respectfully, and be courteous to your concerns and time constraints. Anyone who walks through the door is going to be treated the same way.”
A wide array of offerings
Conveniently located within Nazareth Hospital, with a dedicated entrance across from the guest parking lot (there are even designated parking spaces for pharmacy patrons), the Nazareth Outpatient Pharmacy is a one-stop shop for filling prescriptions, buying over-the-counter medications and browsing health care products.
These products include vitamins, dietary supplements, smoking cessation aids, caregiver essentials, wound care and diabetic supplies. If there’s a product or medication that’s not in stock, the team can place a special order.
Cunningham and his team of pharmacists, all of whom are experienced health consultants, are ready to address any questions or concerns that a patient has about their prescription.
“We give them literature regarding the medication and its uses, its side effects, how to take it, when to take it, what not to take it with, what to take it with. We verbalize that, but then we also give it to them in writing with every prescription that they get,” says Cunningham. “And then our software does interaction checks as well.”
A true collaboration
The pharmacy’s electronic medical record (EMR) system allows for speedy service and patient safety. Thanks to its integration with Nazareth Hospital’s EMR, providers are able to send prescriptions electronically. The pharmacy can then begin filling that prescription so that by the time the patient arrives, it’s ready for them to pick up. The pharmacy team also uses the EMR to follow up with providers—and receive fast responses—if they have a question about the prescription.
“We have instant communication with the treatment team, whether the patient is in the hospital or going to another Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic provider,” says Cunningham. “I can be in the middle of filling the prescription and literally message the provider to say, ‘Is this a dose change? Did they stop this other medication?’ And it’s almost in real time. You’re not calling, leaving a message, waiting for the doctor to call back. The patient gets their medication quicker.”
Looking ahead
In the fall, the Nazareth Outpatient Pharmacy expects to expand its offerings to include immunization services, including flu shots, the shingles vaccine and more. The pharmacy accepts most insurance plans.
