A Letter from Charmaine Chan, DO
There have been a lot of changes within the St. Mary Medical Center Graduate Medical Education (GME) program within the short span of the academic year. Our first class of Family Medicine residents is graduating, with four of them staying within the St. Mary Medical Center and Nazareth Hospital systems.
Additionally, we moved Nazareth's General Surgery residency program to St. Mary Medical Center due to the larger volume of cases available here. Although, they continue to maintain coverage at Nazareth as well.
With the merger of the Cardiology departments at both hospitals, the Cardiology fellows will cover the services at St. Mary, which will allow the residents access to more didactics and interactions with the fellows. One of our Internal Medicine residents, Dr. Thanh Nguyen, and a previous Chief resident, Dr. Smriti Bhatia, will be returning as fellows.
Our new Internal Medicine Clinical Observership program is introducing many international medical graduates to our residency and allowing us to work with potential new applicants. We also continue to cultivate opportunities to work with our pharmacy residents and chaplaincy residents.
Externally, we have initiated a new partnership for the Mid-Atlantic region with the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, and agreements are in the pipeline with a Caribbean medical school.
We will continue to keep you posted with changes in GME. Please keep us posted with your accomplishments in and outside of medicine, as well as additions to your families as you progress in your careers and lives!
With fondness,
Charmaine Chan, DO
