A Letter from Charmaine Chan, DO
This month, Nazareth Hospital is preparing to graduate another class of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Podiatry and Transitional Year residents. Additionally, our first class of Cardiology fellows is graduating, with one of them joining the department at St. Mary Medical Center.
As for our General Surgery residency program, we decided strategically to move that program to St. Mary but have continued to maintain the resident team at Nazareth.
A new vascular surgeon is joining our team in the fall to help provide more surgical volume and opportunities for our surgical residents. As a result of multiple residency programs closing throughout the country, our Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine programs have accepted orphan residents into our programs––helping to ensure that they can complete their education and continue their medical careers.
An innovation started by Internal Medicine this year is our new Clinical Observership program, which is introducing many international medical graduates to our residency and allowing us to work with potential new applicants. Additionally, we have initiated a new partnership for the Mid-Atlantic region with the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, and agreements are in the pipeline with a Caribbean medical school.
We will continue to keep you posted with changes in the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. Please keep us posted with your accomplishments in and outside of medicine, as well as additions to your families as you progress in your careers and lives!
With fondness,
Charmaine Chan, DO
