A Letter from Charmaine Chan, DO

Charmaine ChanIt is hard to believe that it has been six years since we opened St. Mary Medical Center to Graduate Medical Education (GME) and welcomed our first class of internal medicine and pharmacy residents! Since then, we have expanded our pharmacy residency to three residents a year and started a family medicine residency, which will be graduating their first class in 2025.

With an increased faculty, we have obtained approval for osteopathic recognition for our internal medicine and family medicine residencies.

These training programs have infused our hospital with an enhanced commitment to scholarship and raised the standard of care through the presence of all these learners. With the hiring of a research coordinator, our scholarly activity has skyrocketed exponentially with many residents presenting at national organizations in their specialties.

GME could not have accomplished this without the outstanding commitment of all our attending physicians, nursing staff, and other ancillary staff, who have worked hard to create a supportive learning and working environment throughout the hospital.

In the last several years, we have also enhanced our learning opportunities with our increased alignment with Nazareth Hospital. This partnership has offered our residents more opportunities to care for a diverse population in different learning environments. The posting of a team of general surgery residents at St. Mary is an example of additional teamwork and improving patient care.

We will continue to keep you posted with changes in GME. Please reach out and keep us posted with your accomplishments as you progress in your career and life!

With fondness,
Charmaine Chan,
