Saint Francis Family Medicine Program Update

New resident orientation for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Saint Francis Hospital begins each year in early June—giving our six new residents a few weeks to settle in and learn about our systems, campus, and colleagues. However, there are exciting off-site opportunities as well. The residents had an exciting opportunity on the first day of orientation.

Each year, Robert Monteleone, MD, former program director and current program faculty, supports an event in Elkton, Maryland, that provides sports physicals to hundreds of school-age children in preparation for their coming academic year. The new residents jumped right into this opportunity on their first day.

A representative from Christiana Care noticed their enthusiasm and asked if our residents could support one of their new ventures, Camp Scrubs. This project gives camp participants interested in health care a chance to learn from those in the various medical professions—discussing college and career paths, and the academic courses, challenges, and focus needed to reach their goals.

Three residents, Thomas Bonitz, DO; Sam Brosman, MD; and Juan Leon Ariza, MD, participated in two Camp Scrub sessions in June and July. As a result of their great job, our residency program has been asked to support the camp next summer.
