Have a Healthy Pregnancy After Weight-Loss Surgery

It’s best to wait 12-24 months to become pregnant post-surgery.

Make sure to talk with your doctor about your diet and vitamin levels before you start trying to conceive. When you’re pregnant, it’s important to gain weight appropriately and eat nutritious foods, especially if you’ve had surgery to lose weight.

Extra pounds come off quickly following bariatric surgery. After the surgery, you may not be getting enough protein, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calcium. It’s important to talk with your doctor, or a nutritionist, about what vitamins you need during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins alone may not be enough to keep you and your baby healthy following weight-loss surgery. You also need to eat a healthy diet that’s packed with nutrients.

Your doctor can also tell you if it’s safe to exercise while you are pregnant. Staying active can promote healthy weight gain during pregnancy and help you lose weight after the baby is born. You can keep doing your pre-pregnancy exercise routine, as long as your health doesn’t change and you keep your doctor updated about your fitness level throughout your pregnancy.

If you haven’t been exercising, start by going on a brisk walk for five minutes every day. Every week, try to add a few minutes to your workout. Keep doing this until you can stay active for at least 30 minutes.

You should also tell your doctor what kind of surgery you had. If you have a gastric band, it may need to be adjusted during your pregnancy. You should also let your doctor know if your stomach hurts or if you feel sick to your stomach. Common pregnancy symptoms can mask serious bariatric surgery complications.
