I had my bariatric surgery. Now what?

Our bariatrics coordinator will follow up with you after your weight-loss surgery. It’s important that you continue to follow proper diet and exercise programs, but also to have blood work checked at least annually to avoid any problems with potential iron or vitamin deficiencies. We will give you a general schedule of recommended follow-up visits as soon as we schedule your surgery date. By giving you this information in the beginning, we hope to ease any nerves and assure you that we will be here every step of the way.

What support is available to patients who undergo bariatric surgery?

It’s important to use the resources offered to you after surgery. For some, the transition to “normal life” will be easy, while with others it will be more challenging. At Mercy, we provide access to our bariatrics coordinator during every stage of the surgery. This doesn’t end after the procedure as is the case in other bariatric programs.

We also provide monthly support groups where patients and their loved ones can attend to receive the answers to the questions they might still have and for further guidance. In addition, follow-up meetings with dietitians are available after surgery. And of course, I am available 24/7 to answer any questions you might have.

How will I know what’s right for me?

Follow-up is very specific to each patient. We make sure that the plan we set for you is customized to your needs. Your treatment plan will depend on your weight-loss goal, medical conditions and the progress you’ve made. If you’re getting off track, we’ll help you head in the right direction.
