Nazareth Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes healing.
Specialists at Nazareth Hospital’s outpatient Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine save limbs and heal wounds once thought untreatable. They do it with skill, technology, education and a holistic approach that makes each patient a key member of the care team.
For many wound care patients, treatment begins with a new understanding of the problem.
“The skin is the largest organ of the body,” explains Larry Dix, Director of the Center. “Uncontrolled disease processes like diabetes and poor circulation can cause organs, including the skin, to fail. When skin fails, it shows up as a wound.”
Since the origin of a wound is within the body, healing requires a comprehensive plan that is more than skin deep. It may involve lifestyle changes, physical therapy and better nutrition, as well as medical treatments that include the latest skin-grafting advances, wound debridement and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). HBOT is a treatment in which the patient rests inside a pressurized chamber, breathing 100% oxygen to promote the body’s healing mechanisms.
“Our patients learn that by taking an active approach to treatment, they can heal their bodies,” says Larry. “And that can be life-changing.”
Nazareth physicians, nurses and HBOT-certified technicians help patients with the following:
- Diabetic wounds
- Arterial/ischemic wounds
- Collagen vascular disease
- Surgical wounds
- Venous stasis
- Pressure ulcers
- Radiation soft tissue injuries
