Knee replacement returns Victoria Curran to her favorite activities
Victoria Curran could no longer do the things she enjoyed.
The constant ache in her knees was that intense.
Plagued by joint pain, the normally active 65-year-old Philadelphia resident found everyday activities like playing with her grandchildren or doing light household chores to be overwhelming. Even shopping had become an enormous challenge. “By the time I got in the store and looked around, the pain was so bad, I couldn’t even think about what I was buying,” she recalls.
Victoria was prescribed anti-inflammatory medications and a series of injections, but the pain would not go away. That’s when she sought the expertise of William Arnold, MD, PhD, an orthopedic surgeon at the Rothman Institute at Nazareth Hospital. Dr. Arnold specializes in total joint replacement. He identified severe wear and tear in Victoria’s knee joints, a condition caused by osteoarthritis. The joints’ protective cartilage had worn down over time.
Up and About
With the goal of returning Victoria to pain-free movement, Dr. Arnold performed total joint replacement surgery on both knees in February at Nazareth Hospital. After four days, she was able to start inpatient physical therapy and after five days of therapy, she could head home. The experience was positive, she says, in part due to the caring, compassionate people at Nazareth, a hallmark of the hospital’s orthopedic program. “The staff there was amazing, and they were extremely patient and right there if you needed them,” she says.
Today, Victoria is participating in physical therapy to regain the fullest range of pain-free motion possible. “I’m glad I had the surgery done,” she says. “I’m looking forward to being able to shop again, go on vacation and do everyday activities without the pain of arthritis. And the best part? I can play with my grandchildren again!”
A Joint Effort
Nazareth Hospital’s Joint Replacement Program is staffed with top-notch orthopedic specialists and equipped with the latest medical technology to help patients like Victoria regain their quality of life.
To bring patients the highest level of care, Nazareth Hospital partners with the internationally acclaimed Rothman Institute. “This solid partnership combines world-class expertise with the latest medical technology to treat even the most complex orthopedic cases,” says Dr. Arnold. “We have outstanding success rates.”
More Ortho Options
Nazareth’s specialists perform a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including hip, knee, shoulder and ankle replacements. The team also specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures to help patients recover more quickly and decrease scarring and pain.
Recent advances include the latest pain management options to get patients back on their feet faster. “We’re using more localized, targeted pain management so patients are able to better participate in their therapy and can go home faster,” explains Dr. Arnold.
Future surgeries may involve custom-fit devices to help with the alignment and sizing of the implants. “The use of these customized devices is an exciting new personalized procedure that may improve alignment and range of motion for each patient,” says Dr. Arnold.
Victoria Curran is back to her active lifestyle now that she is pain-free following total joint replacement at Nazareth Hospital.
