Take good care of your heart

“And I tell them at least 15 minutes of exercise—every day,” he says. “That’s what I’m prescribing for you.”

Dr. David Addley is making a point, of course, and trying to impress upon his patients how crucial regular exercise is for the heart.

If you were in his office, he’d urge you to get daily exercise as well—and to follow the tips on the next page. They can also help protect your heart from disease.

Stop smoking if you light up. “Smoking speeds the development of artery-clogging plaque that can cause a heart attack,” Dr. Addley says. Don’t be discouraged if you fail—it often takes multiple attempts to quit for good.

Make heart-healthy food choices. Eat less fatty meat and more plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables and beans. Focus on low-fat dairy products, whole grains and healthy fats, such as olive and canola oil. And go easy on sugary foods and drinks.

Trim down if you’re overweight. Losing just 5 to 10 percent of your current weight can lower your heart disease risk.
