The sneezin’ season: 3 ways to avoid allergies this spring

pollen particlesSpring is in the air! But with the beautiful trees, grass and flowers come pollen and mold spores, also known as allergens, which can trigger the all-too-familiar seasonal allergies. This allergy season, set yourself up for success. Keep those pesky symptoms at bay with these three key steps.

1. Manage your meds

Talk to your doctor about the medications that you’re taking. Some drugs that are used to treat allergies can cause problems, such as anxiety, fatigue, constipation and blurred vision.

There may be newer medicines that have fewer side effects or that will work better for you. Or you may need a combination of treatments. Your doctor can help you find the best options.

2. Check for triggers

Your allergies will likely be worse on days that are hot, dry and windy. So plan to play a little “keep-away”—as in keep away from whatever is triggering your symptoms. If pollen and mold are the culprits, you can:

    • Keep your windows closed at night. Use air conditioning if you can—it helps clean and dry the air.
    • Check the weather report for pollen counts in the area. And stay indoors when levels are high.
    • Take precautions if you spend a lot of time outdoors. When you head back indoors, take a shower, shampoo your hair and change your clothes.

3. Create an allergy action plan

Your doctor can help you make a complete plan for managing allergies. Stick to the plan, and take any medicines as directed. If your symptoms still aren’t under control, work with your doctor to find other methods that will help put allergies in their place.
