Stock up with healthy foods for the winter
With winter coming, you can count on this: bad weather.
And the last thing you want to do when it’s snowy or icy is make a trip to the grocery store because you’re running low on food.
“So plan ahead now, rather than getting caught empty-handed later on,” says Andrea Byrd, MA, RD, LDN, Mercy LIFE Dietary Manager. “Stock your pantry and freezer with plenty of healthy staples that will help you eat well.”
For your freezer
- Frozen fruits and vegetables are a particularly good choice if you live alone because you can easily take out a single portion and save the rest for another time.
- Lean meat or ground meat, skinless poultry, and fish fillets. You may be able to find them frozen individually.
For your pantry
- Dried fruit and whole-grain crackers or pretzels. They’re smart snack choices.
- Quick-cooking oatmeal and whole-grain cereal.
- Dry milk and boxed 100 percent fruit and vegetable juices. You can use the dry milk if you’re out of fresh milk.
- Peanut butter. Spread it on those whole-wheat crackers or enjoy it as a sandwich filling.
- Beans, peas, carrots, beets and other no-salt-added canned vegetables.
- Peaches, pears and other canned fruits. Buy ones canned in water, juice or light syrup.
- Canned chicken or tuna packed in water.
- Dried beans, peas and lentils.
- Spaghetti, macaroni and other pasta.
- Tomato and other ready-to-heat sauces.
- Low-sodium canned soup.
