Exercising with a heart condition can be a good move
With warm weather on the way, it’s a good time to think about toning your muscles and improving your health! Susan Kille, MSPT, physical therapist for Mercy LIFE, has helped many heart patients reach their fitness goals.
“Nearly everyone who is healthy enough to exercise can improve their physical fitness,” Susan says. Here are Susan’s tips for exercising with a heart condition:
- Ask your doctor: Your doctor will make sure that your heart is strong enough for exercise and explain the best exercises for you.
- Start Slow: Don’t do too much, too soon. You may get hurt or burned out.
- Don’t give up: You are more likely to succeed if you set short-term goals. A short-term goal could be walking for 15 minutes, three days a week. Each week, add five more minutes.
Here are some excellent exercises for heart patients (with doctor approval):
- Walking: It’s inexpensive and can be done almost anywhere. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Water workout: Water resists you when you move. Light water exercise such as gentle water aerobics can strengthen your heart and lungs.
- Strength training: This form of exercise can increase the size and strength of your muscles and lower your blood pressure.
- Stretching: Stress increases heart rate and raises blood pressure. Relaxation exercises like stretching, yoga and meditation can help your body deal safely with stress.
