Your heart is a muscle. Without exercise, it can slowly lose strength. And people with heart disease need regular exercise just like anyone else. Studies show that it helps them stay healthier and live longer.
There are safe exercises for people with heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity, five days a week. You can also do 10 minutes, three times a day. Moderate activity means you are breathing harder, but you can still talk easily. Walking can be a great moderate exercise. There are also exercises for people who cannot walk. Before you start, check with your doctor. He or she can help you make a safe exercise plan.
Your doctor may also suggest a cardiac rehabilitation program. In these programs, you work one-on-one with a physical therapist. They stay with you while you do the exercises. They make sure you are safe.
