Mercy Philadelphia Utilizes New Device to Diagnose Liver Disease

West Philadelphia (May 22, 2018): Today, Mercy Philadelphia announced the integration of state-of-the-art technology into its gastrointestinal and digestive health services to address growing health needs in the West Philadelphia community. The new device, FibroScan®, uses a five-minute, non-surgical test to help physicians screen for chronic liver conditions, such as Hepatitis B and C, alcohol liver injury, cirrhosis and fatty liver disease, which affects more than 100 million Americans.

Liver disease can severely impact a patient’s quality of life and, oftentimes, does so with no signs or symptoms. The FibroScan® ultrasound exam provides patients with a pain-free alternative to liver biopsy or surgery to assess liver damage. Additionally, patients can receive FibroScan® exam results instantly.

“By providing this new modality, we ultimately are improving the health of the community we serve,” said Steven Lichtenstein, DO, Medical Director of Digestive Health Services and Chief of Gastroenterology. “This new technology provides benefits for both physicians and, more importantly, for patients—by making screening less invasive and providing test results much more quickly.”
