Mercy LIFE Celebrates Grand Opening of Sharon Hill Day Center
New Delaware County senior day center helps area seniors thrive independently
SHARON HILL, PA (November 20, 2014) – As part of its 2014 expansion into all of Delaware County, Mercy LIFE celebrated the grand opening of Mercy LIFE Sharon Hill on Wednesday, Nov. 19. The grand opening event included a dedication and blessing, open house and facility tours in addition to the third annual Mercy LIFE Devoted Caregiver Award presentation, all in time for National Family Caregivers Month in November.
Mercy LIFE is a nationally recognized Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and the new facility, located conveniently on the corner of Chester Pike and Calcon Hook Road, expands access to quality healthcare and adult day program services to all qualifying Delco seniors.
The afternoon included a blessing ceremony and anointing of each room in the facility and all staff, in accordance with Mercy’s Catholic Healthcare Ministry rituals. The celebration and Devoted Caregiver Award ceremony featured a program of speakers, including Delaware County Council Chairman and Senator-elect Tom McGarrigle, Imani Johnson, Field Representative, Office of U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, and Karen Hepp, Anchor/Reporter, FOX 29 News. Susan Croushore, Interim President & CEO of Mercy Health System, and Carol Quinn, MSN, BSN, RN, Mercy LIFE and Mercy Home Health CEO, also gave remarks.
“While we have served seniors throughout Delaware County since January 2014 at our South Philadelphia location, Mercy LIFE Sharon Hill marks our first physical LIFE Day Center in this area,” said Quinn. “By implementing Mercy LIFE’s robust clinical and social services right here in Sharon Hill, we are able to ensure our participants remain as independent as possible, have access to round-the-clock healthcare management, and have the best overall quality of life—right in their own neighborhood.”
“Delaware County has always been a welcoming area for seniors and their families to live and work,” County Council Chairman and Senator-elect McGarrigle said. “We are excited to welcome the new Mercy LIFE Sharon Hill Adult Day Center, and look forward to working together with this program, which provides significant assistance to community seniors who need it most.”
In addition to the grand opening ceremony, Mercy LIFE celebrated its third annual Devoted Caregiver Award program. The award, established in 2012 to recognize one outstanding Mercy LIFE family caregiver, was presented to Juanita Smith of South Philadelphia. Smith, a busy mother of five, has dedicated her life to caring for her mother Wilhelmina, a Mercy LIFE participant who suffers from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Smith read an original poem, “Being Honored,” to express her gratitude for the award. She said, “I am humbled to care for the woman who taught me how to be loving, tender and kind.”
